Rick Santorum plans to suspend his campaign for the GOP presidential nomination,” reports USA TODAY. What? Huh? Seriously? What was that? As I see Facebook and Twitter explode with this news, my mind is trying to come to grips with these words: “Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.” I don’t want to believe it, but it is seemingly a statistical fact.

I want to like Mitt Romney, I really do. But, it is becoming harder and harder to do so as I think about him more and more.  How can I vote for a man who has his own finger prints all over Obamacare?  How can I vote for a man who said he is for strict gun laws and then says he is pro-gun? How can I vote for a man who has said he is for a “woman’s right to choose” and then says he is pro-life? How can I support a man who has issued 189 same sex marriage licenses?

Mitt Romney is a moderate. He is a lukewarm cup of coffee, a piece of cold pizza, or that hurried bowl of cereal to get you going with your day. In other words, he is a candidate that can kind of fill a need but is not for the long term.

Mitt Romney is not conservatism. Conservatism is a strong constitutional stance on life, marriage, guns, fiscal, and foreign issues. The former Massachusetts governor is none of those things. Ask yourself this question: What is conservatism if it continually moves to the center? What is conservatism if we don’t stand strong with our beliefs? What is “conservatism” if it is continually shifting to the left? The answer is: “nothing.”

Do you remember the words “flip flop” and “waffle” from the 2004 presidential campaign? Those are the words and strategy that the Bush campaign used to take down the Kerry campaign. And, those are the words that can bring down the Romney campaign. The left will adopt the 2004 Bush playbook and use it against Mitt Romney.

Don’t get me wrong: I want to vote for Romney. But, if the election were today, I don’t think that I could vote for him. Please convince me.

Sincerely,
A Disgruntled Former Cain and Santorum Supporter
