Barack Obama campaigned in 2008 as the anti-George Bush: he was going to bring peace to the world by being everything that George W. Bush was not. Now, seven years later, his foreign policy has been a failure by any objective definition. During a recent press conference on Paris, he said in part that he was “not interested in doing is posing or pursuing some notion of American leadership or America winning.” This could be the most mind numbing and asinine thing an American president has ever said.
Obama has compared himself to Washington, Lincoln, and FDR, but in terms of being Commander-in-Chief, Obama is nothing like those three. Those three fought wars in far more difficult circumstances, and were also not afraid to do what it took to win.
George Washington ordered the execution of Major John Andre, who was caught with papers that detailed Benedict Arnold’s treasonous plot to hand West Point over to the British. Obama, on the other had, releases terrorists from Guantanamo Bay. Washington occasionally had deserters shot; by comparison, Obama trades five Taliban prisoners for Bowe Bergdahl. Nobody is arguing that Bergdahl should be executed, but it is clear that Barack Obama is not comparable to George Washington.
Abraham Lincoln had to fire generals because they were not prepared to do what it took to win the Civil War. As Lincoln put it, “No general yet found can face the arithmetic, but the end of the war will be at hand when he shall be discovered.” Obama, by comparison, cannot do the arithmetic as shown by his blocking 75% of airstrikes against ISIS. Abraham Lincoln had to deal with Copperheads who favored peace with the Confederacy at any cost. Obama, as stated above, is not interest in pursuing “America winning,” even though a majority of the American people support a ground campaign against ISIS!
Franklin Roosevelt called Pearl Harbor “A date which will live in infamy.” Obama managed to bring himself to call the Paris Attacks a “setback.” During World War II, the United States firebombed Japan and flattened Germany. Today, the United States conducts about 11 sorties per day against ISIS. After FDR died, Harry Truman ordered the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Obama essentially gives nuclear weapons to the enemy regime in Iran.
The lengthy campaign against ISIS is against an enemy that is nowhere near as strong as the British that George Washington faced with a collection of ragtag volunteers. Nor is it akin to the Confederacy that Lincoln had to defeat not only on the battlefield, but in public opinion as well. Nor again is ISIS the same as the Japanese or the Nazis that FDR dealt with. Obama’s comparing himself to the men who led the nation through its toughest and darkest hours is arrogant, and insults the intelligence of anybody who understands history.
In a twisted way, Obama has achieved his goal of being the anti-George Bush. In the lead up to the Iraq War, french fries were temporarily renamed “Freedom Fries.” Now, the socialist President of France is a more serious wartime president than America’s president, and the French are hitting targets the US refuses to hit.
It is time Obama and the rest of the Democratic Party realizes that the world doesn’t care about his campaign promises on foreign policy.
