European countries have opened their doors to refugees from Northern African and Middle Eastern countries for the past few years. According to the German Federal Department for Migration and Refugees, 57,000 out of 103,708 Syrian applications were approved for October 2015.
In Sweden, the country with the highest rape count, nearly 77.5% of all rape crimes are committed by Muslim migrants from Muslim countries. Many female victims of the sexual assaults that occurred in Cologne, Germany on New Year’s Eve described their attackers as having darker skin and Middle Eastern features. As a result, police in various Bavarian towns have warned parents to monitor their daughters’ dress to avoid confusion in their intentions. Mayor of Cologne, Henriette Raker, asks women to keep an “arms length away” from men at all times, to ensure their safety.
With all these sexual assaults and accusations that the attackers are Muslim refugees, why are so few main stream news sources in the United States reporting on this rape crisis? Perhaps the Left fears that if too many Westerners are aware of this specific danger refugees pose to our women, our countries will be less lenient with accepting refugees. However, this is an issue that needs to be discussed. Should any country choose to take in refugees, they must first and foremost consider the safety of their own citizens.
The sad conclusion that can be drawn is that there are inherent discrepancies between Western values and those in Northern Africa and Middle Eastern countries. Women walk around freely, wearing whatever they choose in countries like Germany. This is the complete opposite of Muslim countries, where women can barely show any skin.
The New York Times interviewed a refugee from Eritrea, Abdu Osman Kelifa. He stated that “Men have weaknesses and when they see someone smiling it is difficult to control. If someone wants a lady he can just take her and he will not be punished.”
Die Welt, a German magazine interviewed a Bavarian politician who stated that “when Muslim teenage boys go to open air swimming pools, they are overwhelmed when they see girls in bikinis. These boys, who come from a culture where for women it is frowned upon to show naked skin, will follow girls and bother them without their realizing it.”
These asylum seekers have been raised with specific values and customs regarding women that are not consistent with those of the Western World. This is not to say that every refugee seeking asylum is a rapist who has little to no respect for women and their rights, but there is a clear inconsistency in values that cannot be so easily adjusted.
Countries like Norway have implemented training sessions for these refugees to learn about Western norms in efforts to combat the heightened danger of sexual assault European women face. Denmark and Germany have begun classes at checkpoints at their borders. Will this be enough, however, to combat years of living in a society where women are treated like second class citizens? Time will only tell. Yet again, is this a risk Western countries are willing to take?
