Christmas is just around the corner, so it’s time for conservatives to get their wish lists together to send up to the North Pole. With majorities in the state legislatures, the governor’s offices, the Congress, and the Senate, there is no reason we can’t dream big for 2017. On top of this potential legislative powerhouse, we have a Republican president who is likely to sign most of this legislation into effect.
So, with that in mind, here are some of the things that I want for Christmas from our conservative legislators.
1. Defund Planned Parenthood
Our top priority should be cutting off all government funding to America’s top abortion provider. This is a no-brainer for social conservatives. Further, for the first time in eight years, this is a viable piece of legislation. If most Americans really care about funding this terrible organization (they don’t), perhaps they would have voted differently.
2. Repeal Obamacare
Even liberals can get behind replacing Obamacare. The Affordable Care Act is a fundamentally flawed piece of legislation that is causing Americans more problems than it solved. The American healthcare system is in dire need of assistance, but this 1,200 page behemoth wasn’t it. Democrats who rallied around it are now open to moderate adjustments that could relieve the frustration. That’s especially good news, considering that Republicans need 8 Democratic senators to pass any sort of replacement bill. Here’s a great place to start: repeal the individual mandate.
3. Open an investigation into Russian hacking.
It is clear that our electoral integrity was in jeopardy this election. Whether from pre-existing voter fraud or from Russian hackers, American confidence in our electoral systems is dangerously low. Investigating the real causes of voter fraud, foreign or domestic, would show Americans that they–and their votes–matter. Additionally, though the incoming administration is friendlier with Russia than many would care to admit, Putin and his cronies remain a serious threat to our interests.
There are many other policies that I could have mentioned, but I think these are a good place to start. Let’s use this opportunity to make some conservative Christmas dreams come true.
