This past Sunday, President Obama’s top adviser repeated a line that has been pushed by the media for quite some time. Valerie Jarrett proudly stated, in an interview broadcast on CNN, that the Obama administration’s eight years of leading were completely “scandal-free.” In fact, Jarrett even took her praise a step further by saying that the President had never even done anything “to embarrass himself.” This very same lie was stated by President Obama himself back in November. Anybody that has followed the news cycle within the past eight years, to even a minimal extent, would know these claims to be flat-out lies.
During both of President Obama’s terms, major scandals dominated the news. These scandals were not only embarrassing for President Obama himself but they also for the Executive Branch as a whole.
One of President Obama’s earliest and most embarrassing scandals was Operation Fast and Furious. For nearly two years – beginning in the fall of 2009 and ending in early 2011 – the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which is a division of the U.S. Justice Department, ran a program purportedly to discover and shut down illegal smuggling operations. In an effort to accomplish this goal, the ATF “purposefully allowed known or suspected gun smugglers to purchase guns at federally licensed firearms dealers in Arizona. The government did not seek to abort these gun purchases, intercept the smugglers after the purchases, or recover the guns they had purchased.”
This is embarrassing because, in many cases, these weapons ended up in the hands of the wrong people. Mexican drug cartels used two rifles sold by the federal government to smugglers in the murder of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in December 2010. Another one of the guns was used by terrorists during the attack in Garland, Texas back in 2015.
Of course, the Obama administration sought to cover up nearly all of the details of this operation when Congress began investigating. As reported on by the Daily Wire, “Then-Attorney General Eric Holder was held in contempt of Congress for stonewalling investigations into Operation Fast and Furious, and President Barack Obama further stonewalled the investigations by wrongly asserting executive privilege.” After intense congressional hearings and court cases, many of the details of this deplorable program were revealed.
Operation Fast and Furious was just one of the first of many scandals that would plague President Obama over the rest of his term in office. The administration’s handling of the attacks in Benghazi, the targeting of conservative organizations by Obama’s IRS during the 2012 election cycle, the EPA’s poisoning of two major rivers out West, the controversy surrounding President Obama’s alleged ransom payments to Iran, the deplorable treatment of our veterans at the VA, and many other dishonorable actions occurred during President Obama’s time in office.
Nevertheless, the lie continues to be repeated and accepted by the mainstream media.
