Many Americans are rightly concerned by the emergence of a newly emboldened “Alt-Right,” the hodgepodge of neo-Nazis, Ku-Klux-Klannites, and other unsavory groups joined together by a common denial of the declaration that all men are created equal. Indeed, the ideologies espoused by these groups are totally contrary to the values this country was founded upon and are totally foreign to true conservatism. But somehow, amidst all the media coverage and concern over the alt-rightists, the far more successful rise of the “alt-left” has been whitewashed and ignored.

Take a look, for instance, at Al Sharpton. In addition to the many anti-semitic and anti-white racial slurs that have emerged from his mouth, Sharpton actually has blood on his hands, having played a crucial role in inciting the crowds in the 1991 Crown Heights pogrom and the ’95 Freddy’s Fashion Mart slaughter. Yet he continues to enjoy insider status in the Democratic Party, having served as Barack Obama’s go-to liason with the black community and hobnobbing with Hillary Clinton and other Democratic bigweights. (Blood may be thicker than water, but it is apparently outweighed by the votes the Democrats think Sharpton can deliver.) Or what about Jesse Jackson, the prominent Democratic senator and repeated presidential candidate who called Jews “Hymies” and allowed race-baiter Loius Farrakhan to issue death threats against anyone opposing his candidacy? And it’s not the alt-right that’s causing an increasingly overt anti-semitic atmosphere on college campuses across the country. As the widely respected Alan Dershowitz says, “what’s new is the anti-Semitism from the right has become emboldened and now almost catching up with the anti-Semitism on the hard left which has been in existence for 20 years,”

It is right to be afraid of the authoritarianism and espousal of fascism by the alt-right. But why do so many public figures who speak about the alt-right dangers have nothing to say about the violence on full display from the alt-left? Where were they when mobs burnt down neighborhoods in Ferguson and Baltimore? Where were they when violent thugs disrupted an event by Milo Yiannopoulos, or torched cars at Trump’s inauguration?

Yes, the Alt-Right needs to be fought and rejected. But why does the alt-left get a free pass?
