Well-known and controversial conservative commentator Tomi Lahren shocked Democrats, Republicans, and everyone in between last week on The View. When the issue of women’s rights was discussed, Lahren declared that she is pro-choice.

For that stance, Lahren has come under fire–but is this attack against her fair? I don’t think so.

What Tomi Said

Meditating on the topic of women under a Trump administration, Tomi spoke against the 68% of conservatives who are “anti-abortion.” She confidently explained:

I’m someone that’s for limited government. So I can’t sit here and be a hypocrite and say I’m for limited government but I think the government should decide what women do with their bodies. I can sit here and say that as a Republican and I can say, you know what, I’m for limited government, so stay out of my guns, and you can stay out of my body as well.

After receiving backlash from many fans, pro-life groups, and news sources, Lahren took to her Twitter to defend her comments. Lahren said, “I have moderate, conservative, and libertarian views. I’m human. I will never apologize, to anyone, for being an independent thinker.”

The Blaze ceased production of Lahren’s show after her appearance on The View. Glenn Beck, The Blaze‘s founder, has also publicly condemned Tomi for her stance.

Why Tomi Is Worth Defending

Though it is a substantially controversial event in political media, Tomi Lahren reminds us that political views are not limited to a certain box. You do not have to check off a list to determine where you stand ideologically. Some put liberty over morality. Others push that the government should enforce morality. While it is a highly debated topic, Lahren claimed that she put limited government before her other personal views.

Our need for democracy and free speech stems exactly from our diversity of opinions. We cannot be outraged every single time someone isn’t exactly like us. It is our job to make a better America for everyone, not fuel division within parties. Remember, in-party conflict in the early 1900s led to the Bull Moose Party, and we see how well that worked out.

Further, while plenty conservatives may be outraged and betrayed by Tomi, abortion seems to be her only moderate stance. She quickly defended President Trump about  his past comments towards women. She stated, “If he’s so anti-woman, why did he select a female to run his campaign? If Kellyanne Conway had been a Democrat, you all at this table would be applauding her, singing her praises.”

Why Conservative Attacks on Tomi Aren’t Fair

Tomi Lahren’s stardom stemmed from her complete, blunt honesty. How are we now going to sit back and berate her for the very thing we love about her? That’s a tad bit hypocritical.

Tomi Lahren is a very young, conservative female succeeding in media. She is a voice of the people, but she is mostly a voice for herself. She worked hard to be this successful. We can’t be angry that someone has an opinion. If it bothers you that much, go find a platform to speak your opinion.

As Tomi says, “Whether you love what I’m saying or hate what I’m saying, you’re having a reaction to it, and that’s exactly what needs to happen in this country.” You are entitled to your opinion, but you are not entitled to berating a girl for simply stating hers.

Stay classy, America.
