Thursday, June 8th was the day of the James Comey hearing.
That day seemed to have been circled in bright red ink on the desk calendars of conspiracy theorists, disillusioned leftists, and never-Trumpers everywhere. The elaborate web of treason spun by President Trump’s administration would be laid bare for the world to see.
Surely, this would be the final nail in the coffin. It would reveal once and for all that President Trump and his campaign worked with the Russians to subvert American democracy. We would finally have evidence of Trump’s collusion with Vladimir Putin!
But that’s not what happened. Instead, the former FBI director’s testimony did little more than confirm what conservatives already knew or expected.
According to Comey, President Trump never engaged in obstruction of justice. Further, Loretta Lynch’s Justice Department seemingly acted out of political expediency. In addition, there is no evidence whatsoever that the President or his campaign team colluded with anyone in Russia’s government.
But as we know, this is par for the course when it comes to media-generated scandals involving the Trump administration.
Non-stories are billed as groundbreaking developments, and the President’s opponents are whipped into a wild fury. When the so-called revelation finally drops, it proves to be a dead-end. The lidless eye of the mainstream media then shifts its focus elsewhere.
The media-generated circus atmosphere is going to be a constant facet of our lives for the next several years. Outlets like CNN struggle to maintain their waning legitimacy by displaying countdown clocks in anticipation of what proved to be a mundane Congressional hearing. Unfortunately, this hearing was just the first taste of their palpable desperation. At this rate, we may actually get tired of winning before it’s all over.
