Game of Thrones is the greatest show on television, and its top producers D.B. Weiss and David Benioff are truly brilliant. Thankfully, Weiss and Benioff are working on a new series to air after GoT ends, called “Confederate.” This new show is based on alternate history where the South had won the Civil War. As a result, slavery is still in existence.
Predictably, leftist snowflakes are banding together to shut it down. However, the fact that SJWs take offense to it is wildly unsurprising: they take offense to pretty much anything, and that hypersensitivity is out of control.
Critics of the show share two prominent qualities: snowflakery and obsession with identity politics. These are on full display in their two main complaints:
- Confederate will be traumatic and offensive for black Americans
- Confederate is illegitimate and wrong because the producers are two white men
These are both ridiculous reasons to cancel a television show.
The idea that someone should avoid doing anything that offends somebody is the epitome of the perverted ideology of political correctness. The idea that a television show is traumatic is just ridiculous.
As for the idea that Confederate is bad because two white men are running it, identity politics is disgusting in general, and is still disgusting here. The idea that the color of one’s skin makes someone incapable of depicting a historical event is racist and gross. The fact that Weiss and Benioff are white is irrelevant to their ability to run a television series depicting slavery.
This show shouldn’t even be controversial. A very similar show, The Man in the High Castle, generated far less controversy. This fantastic show explores an alternate history where the Axis powers won World War II, and the Nazis and the Japanese split up America. As a Jew, I am definitely not offended by its premise. There is no reason that Confederate should be any different.
Telling Fact From Fiction
It would be at least remotely understandable for leftists to campaign to shut down a program that claims to be historically accurate while spreading false information. For example, they might be justified if Confederate was a historical documentary that downplayed the evils of slavery and tried to paint it in a positive light.
However, Confederate is nothing of the sort. It is a 100% fictional show that explores an alternate history. It claims no factual or historical accuracy whatsoever.
I have one thing to say to leftist snowflakes who have issues with Confederate and want to shut it down. This is a television show. If you don’t like it, then don’t watch it. If you really take such grave offense to it, feel free to unsubscribe from HBO.
Weiss and Benioff are great producers, and if The Man in the High Castle provides any sort of prediction, Confederate looks to be a fantastic and original show. You may hate it, and that’s your right, but you better damn well not ruin it for everyone else.
