Google’s hypocrisy and Orwellian tendencies were on full display this weekend after its CEO fired an employee with a differing viewpoint.

Like many companies, Google follows affirmative action policies in its hiring practices. This means they take a person’s gender, race, or even sexual identity into account in the hiring process – never mind that person’s fitness for the job.

James Damore, a software engineer at Google issued a memo titled, “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber” in which he offered statistical evidence to support his claim that the disparity between women and men in the tech industry was not a result of discrimination, but can be accounted for by differing career preferences and aptitudes on average. He presented extensive data to prove that a gender quota imposed upon the hiring process is institutionalized discrimination designed to combat a non-existent problem.

The Factually Supported Memo

Damore began the memo stating that he values inclusion and diversity and is not denying sexism’s existence, but believes an honest conversation about the issue needs to take place to truly address it.

Part of the memo reads:

I’m simply stating that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes and that these differences may explain why we don’t see equal representation of women in tech and leadership.

Men and women are different psychologically. There is nothing controversial about that.

He went on to criticize Google’s false “diversity.”

Google’s political bias has equated the freedom from offense with psychological safety, but shaming into silence is the antithesis of psychological safety…This silencing has created an ideological echo chamber where some ideas are too sacred to be honestly discussed…The lack of discussion fosters the most extreme and authoritarian elements of this ideology.

The CEO’s Response? Suppress Free Speech

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, in response to the memo, stated that this viewpoint is not welcome at Google. He claimed: “The memo has clearly impacted our co-workers, some of whom are hurting and feel judged based on their gender.”

This response is incredibly authoritarian, especially considering the reasonableness of Damore’s factually supported memo. Instead of having a reasoned debate with Damore, Pichai eliminated him.

Facts and differing viewpoints cannot be restricted or dismissed because of subjective and unjustified feelings toward them.

Silencing an Opposing Viewpoint is the Opposite of Inclusion and Diversity

Damore claims he was fired for “perpetuating gender stereotypes.” All he did was propose a different perspective to an issue within the company, one he supported with facts and statistics. By firing James Damore, Google only proved to be the authoritarian, ideological echo chamber that Damore claims it is.

They insist that a gender quota is unquestionably necessary, while refusing to acknowledge that each gender fulfills a different role. If Google ignores the fact that men and women are inherently different and requires all employees to hold the same opinions, why would hiring equal numbers of both genders equate to any sort of diversity in their mind, other than diversity of appearance?

Google demands “diversity” while silencing any logical opposition to it. This has only lead to a suppression of any meaningful diversity, which is that of thought and ideas. They simply want employees to look different, but think the same.
