Grit, as defined by Webster’s Dictionary, is “firmness of mind or spirit :unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger.” Essentially, grit is a will to continue on against all odds.
And grit is something that conservatism desperately needs right now.
A Proud History Under Siege
Conservatives are America’s backbone. Through the decades, our ideology has stood the test of time. We’ve brought hundreds of thousands out of poverty, and preserved the moral truth enshrined in our nation’s identity.
However, if we’re being honest, today’s conservatives are in dire straights. We face a gauntlet of opposition, hatred, and open violence which is stronger today than it has been in the past. Conservatives has been given an ultimatum by progressives, who say we must abandon our beliefs or risk public destruction. The alt-right gives us the same choice: join their side, or become the enemy.
The left will chip away at the ethical motivation of a conservative. It will devalue our ethical roots, and the fundamental values of freedom. The alt-right will attack our inherent beliefs in compassion and love. They will tell us that our country was successful only because of European immigrants, and no one else.
Today, the partisan divide is so deep that it has quite literally isolated conservatives to a political island. We are told that, if we criticize Donald Trump, we are traitors to the cause. Yet, we find no sympathy from progressives who despise us.
Fortunately for us, we know the truth. That truth is that our beliefs have helped shape America into what it is today. We must not give them up for anyone’s outlandish politics.
So What Are We To Do?
While President Truman may not be a conservative icon, his words hold true to our position today.
“Men make history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership, society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.”
-Harry S. Truman
Conservatives know, both in their hearts and through the facts, that what they believe is true. Judeo-Christian beliefs offer moral standards that allow for successful government. These beliefs may not bode well with some, but they are vital to our social system. When moral relativity is given legitimacy, truth becomes irrelevant, and emotions drive policy.
True grit means digging in our heels instead of giving in when opposed by either side. Grit means standing with each other, further educating ourselves on the Founders’ visions for America. It means withstanding the attacks on a daily basis, but never relenting.
As political violence ensues, conservatives must stand as a light in a world that seems to grow darker each day. We must pray that a divided America chooses to look towards that light, and we can share the truth with them. If defending our views means facing opposition from both Republicans and Democrats, we must still stand strong.
“Age wrinkles the body. Quitting wrinkles the soul.”
– General Douglas MacArthur (US Pacific Command WWII)
We must fight to preserve our republic, even if we are the only ones doing it. Our Founders’ are cheering us on from above for standing athwart history and defending what they fought for.
