Over the last several years, the Second Amendment has been under attack more than ever. The left has seemingly made it a personal goal to demonize guns and paint gun owners as lunatics and violence-crazed psychopaths.
Where this all started from, who knows. One thing, however, is for certain: this gun issue is being looked at in all the wrong ways.
The Second Amendment
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
This is the Second Amendment. Notice anything about it?
The left almost never reads the Second Amendment out loud because it destroys their favorite argument, ” You don’t need an assault rifle for home defense.” Liberals like to throw this statement around like it’s the be-all, end-all argument, but it completely misses the mark. While the Second Amendment does protect gun rights for personal safety, it is directly presented in a context where the people, not the military, need to take up arms. Unfortunately, the most likely scenario where that is necessary would be if the government ever became tyrannical, and the people needed to take action.
A counter argument from the left may be therefore the Second Amendment only applies in the case of a militia. This is also not true. The Amendment does not say, “the right of the people to be a militia.” Rather, it states “the right of the people to keep and bear arms.” The Second Amendment is for the defense of both the country and the individual.
Some may say that it is ludicrous to believe our government would ever get to that point. But is it really that far fetched to be wary of tyranny?
History would seem to say no. Throughout the course of history, we have seen many governing bodies turn on their people. Nazi Germany, Stalin and the Soviet Union, and even England and the American Colonies. In only the 20th century, over 2o3 million unarmed citizens were murdered by their own governments.
Now ask yourselves this: is it easier for a government to murder its people if they are armed or unarmed? Not only is it harder for government to go after its own if they are armed, but it also acts as a deterrence.
Debunking More Arguments
Yet another false argument is that AR 15’s and other “assault weapons” should be illegal, but hand guns can stay. The left will give this argument, stating that if “assault weapons” are done away with, then gun violence will end.
This could not be further from the truth. Take Chicago, for example. It has some of the most strict gun laws of any city, but has some of the worst gun violence in the world. What guns are primarily used? Handguns. According to the Chicago Police Department, the vast majority of shootings are caused by handguns–not assault rifles. This proves that shootings wont stop with the banning of assault rifles.
There are many more reasons why the left is wrong in their favor for gun control. However, the primary thing to remember is that the Second Amendment is in place so that we can defend ourselves. Those that try to take it away from us could be the first to turn against us.
As people in the free nation of America, we must always strive to keep our Second Amendment rights. In doing so, we strive for everyday freedom.
