The gun control debate will never go away. It is a highly divisive issue and we often times only hear one side being pushed on us by the media. Unfortunately for them, there are numerous reasons why guns aren’t as bad as they think.

1. As guns have increased, crime has decreased

If more guns contributed to more crime, then we’d expect to see this played out in the numbers. Since 1993 the numbers of guns in America has risen significantly; this follows a significant decrease in crime during the same time period. Having more guns doesn’t cause murders to increase, because the gun needs someone capable of using it for evil.

2. Gun Bans Don’t Decrease Crime

Gun bans have been tried multiple times in the United States. Whether it be banning handguns in Washington DC in the 1970s, or banning assault weapons in 1994, this did not cause a decrease in crime. In multiple cases the banning of guns in cities was followed by increases in crime. Implementing gun bans shouldn’t be tried again; and other methods should be focused on instead.

3. Most guns used in crimes aren’t purchased legally

According to a 2004 study of state prisoners who had a gun with them during the time of a crime, the majority of them did not purchase them legally. Over 75% of the criminals got their guns either illegally through a street source or from family or friends. A similar study was done in Pittsburgh that yielded similar results. If guns were banned, then criminals would still get their hands on guns. However, law-abiding citizens would be hindered.

4. People are more likely to use guns for lawful purposes than unlawful

Pursuant to multiple studies, people use guns for self-defense more than they use them for crimes. According to The National Academies’ Institute of Medicine and National Research Council,

“Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals.”

This is important, because as previously mentioned, most guns used in crimes are purchased illegally. Hindering law-abiding citizens from having guns would prevent them from effectively protecting themselves.

5. American citizens have the right to defend themselves regardless

We are granted the right to self-defense and this is afforded to us even if the numbers change. Just because the crime numbers begin to increase or criminals somehow manage to get their hands on guns legally more often, that doesn’t mean our rights should get stripped away. The Constitution protects us and lays out our rights. It is worth a read.
