A newly elected city councilwoman in Denver, Colorado is calling for a Bernie Sanders-esque economic overhaul in the city.
The new councilwoman, Candi CdeBaca, defeated the incumbent in a major upset. Her victory mirrors that of Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes. Both women unseated incumbents in surprise elections. And, more importantly, both women are self-described Democratic-Socialists.
CdeBaca, much like Ocasio-Cortes, has made her disdain for capitalism clear. CdeBaca claimed that “it doesn’t work,” but provided no evidence.
In fact, there’s an awful lot of evidence to the contrary. Capitalism has pulled more people out of poverty than any other economic system. The “poor” in the United States are richer than 70% of the rest of the world. Further, the United States possesses the largest economy in the world, with projections that it will continue to grow.
After branding the most successful economic system of all time as a failure, CdeBaca went on to say that she believes in “community ownership of land, labor, resources, and distribution of those resources.” And if her previous statements weren’t bad enough, she further claimed she would achieve this goal “by any means necessary.”
That escalated quickly.
Where has this been heard before? Oh, that’s right: Karl Marx, author of The Communist Manifesto. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work out so well. The former Soviet Union’s “overhaul” (read: takeover) of the means of production resulted in ecological destruction beyond anything the United States has ever seen. The Russian people had their property ripped out from under them, seized by the government.
China’s results were very similar. Their ecological effects included disrupted fish migration patterns and rampant deforestation. Plus, China has some of the world’s worst toxic air pollution.
Candi CdeBaca appears to have an all too familiar progressive agenda. But perhaps we should give the new councilwoman the benefit of the doubt. How can we expect the public to understand the evils of socialism and communism while the mainstream media glamorizes it?
