Tensions with Iran have been escalating for weeks after Iranian forces shot down a US drone. Iranians also considered shooting down a manned US spy plane. The US came close to retaliating with air strikes that would have killed around 150 people, but Trump called off the strikes with minutes to spare.

Iran recently also attacked two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman, and then prevented the salvage of the damaged tankers. This attack increased oil prices.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo commented:

“Iran is lashing out because the regime wants our successful maximum pressure campaign lifted. No economic sanctions entitle the Islamic Republic to attack innocent civilians, disrupt global oil markets and engage in nuclear blackmail.”

President Trump announced that the US will impose new sanctions that will further devastate Iran’s economy.

It is not difficult to understand how we got to where we are today.

Iran Hates America

Iran doesn’t hide that it hates America and wants it destroyed. In fact, many in Iran are quite obvious about it.

Iran has funding terrorist organizations for years. Iranian-backed militants killed over 600 American soldiers in Iraq. That makes Iran responsible for 1 out of 6 American deaths in Iraq.

This sentiment has also come directly from the government. After Trump’s withdrawal from the US-Iran nuclear deal, Iranian MPs were captured on video chanting “Death to America.” While chanting, they burned the American flag in the chambers of the Iranian parliament.

These actions may (reasonably) lead to people to think Iran doesn’t want peace with America.

Obama Gave Billions to the Iranians–Without Much In Return

Much of the trouble from recent years stems back to the US-Iran nuclear deal. Obama’s idea was to sign an agreement, the “Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action,” that would give the Iranians billions of dollars. Under the agreement, Tehran would have to restrict nuclear production.

Obama hoped that the deal would prevent Iran from ever acquiring nuclear weapons. The deal still, however, allowed Iran to enhance their nuclear capabilities. According to Foreign Policy:

It allows Iran to conduct research and development to improve its centrifuges and to develop and test potential delivery systems, and does not require Iran to submit a declaration of its past nuclear-related work.

The Obama Administration Lied To The American People

The Obama administration admittedly lied to the American people in order to gain support for the nuclear deal. Obama’s national security adviser Ben Rhodes admitted this in an interview with the New York Times. David Reaboi at The Federalist summarized the Obama administration’s intentions, writing that

it was first necessary to lie to a corrupted and inexperienced American media about all sorts of things, beginning with the nature and intentions of the enemy Iranian regime. Subsequent lies were caked on, as the White House took advantage of a dangerous mix of journalists’ ignorance, their ideological and partisan commitment to the administration, and, finally, their career aspirations.

No matter how much people hate Trump, pulling out of the US-Iran nuclear deal was the right thing to do. The Iranians hate the US. No matter how many billions of dollars we pay them, this won’t change. We cannot allow a country who openly chants “Death to America” to gain power and ever have nuclear weapons.
