In 2002, the Netherlands legalized “assisted suicide.” Politically correct terminology aside, doctors were permitted to murder their patients with their consent. Now, it seems that even consent is optional. The senior doctor of a nursing home recently decided that the “time was right” for his elderly patient, a woman in her eighties suffering from dementia, to die. First, the doctor put a sleep-inducing pill in her coffee. Then he attempted to administer a lethal injection. When his victim resisted, he had other people hold her down as he forcibly ended her life. The Dutch court decided that the doctor acted in...Read More

In his recent speech to Congress, President Trump took the opportunity to pay tribute to Ryan Owens, the Navy SEAL member killed in Yemen and the first military combat fatality of Trump’s presidency. The president stated that Ryan died as he lived, a warrior and a hero, battling against terrorism and securing our nation… Ryan’s legacy is etched into eternity… For as the Bible teaches us, there is no greater act of love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Ryan laid down his life for his friends, for his country and for our freedom. And we will never forget Ryan.” Trump’s tribute produced a standing ovation lasting over two minutes, prompting Ryan’s wife, sitting in the crowd, to tears. Of course, some pundits lost no time in denouncing the tribute, accusing Trump of cynically using his “bully pulpit” to deflect criticism of the raid that resulted in Owen’s death, and even accused Trump and his Defense Secretary, James Mattis, of falsifying the record to justify the raid. Nevertheles, most viewers respected Trump’s decision to honor a fallen hero. And indeed, the people who serve in our military forces deserve our deepest gratitude. Living in a peaceful democracy, we tend to forget that what we have is not free. Democracies do not just spring into existence through some sort of spontaneous generation; they are purchased through blood....Read More
When President Trump offhandedly tossed out a comment about crime in Sweden as a result of an over-accepting immigrant policy, many gleefully seized the opportunity to ridicule his remarks and dismiss the concerns of those reluctant to open the gates to refugees from the Middle East. Trump’s oppenents were quick to point out that Sweden has far less murders than the US, and argued that the influx of refugees has been a completely positive boon to the country. Alas, it seems they spoke a tad too soon. Two days after Trump’s remarks, an attempt by Swedish police to make...Read More
Many Americans are rightly concerned by the emergence of a newly emboldened “Alt-Right,” the hodgepodge of neo-Nazis, Ku-Klux-Klannites, and other unsavory groups joined together by a common denial of the declaration that all men are created equal. Indeed, the ideologies espoused by these groups are totally contrary to the values this country was founded upon and are totally foreign to true conservatism. But somehow, amidst all the media coverage and concern over the alt-rightists, the far more successful rise of the “alt-left” has been whitewashed and ignored. Take a look, for instance, at Al Sharpton. In addition to the many anti-semitic and anti-white racial slurs that have emerged from his mouth, Sharpton actually has blood on his hands, having played a crucial role in inciting the crowds in the 1991 Crown Heights pogrom and the ’95 Freddy’s Fashion Mart slaughter. Yet he continues to enjoy insider status in the Democratic Party, having served as Barack Obama’s go-to liason with the black community and hobnobbing with Hillary Clinton and other Democratic bigweights. (Blood may be thicker than water, but it is apparently outweighed by the votes the Democrats think Sharpton can deliver.) Or what about Jesse Jackson, the prominent Democratic senator and repeated presidential candidate who called Jews “Hymies” and allowed race-baiter Loius Farrakhan to issue death threats against anyone opposing his candidacy? And it’s not the alt-right that’s causing...Read More
It might be easier to just ignore President Trump’s most recent comments about Vladimir Putin. However, intellectual honesty sometimes requires us to transcend party politics. Conservatives rightfully protest the America-bashing that has become the Left’s standard fair. It behooves us to stay true to our beliefs even when they conflict with figures on the Right. Let us first give credit where credit is due. Many conservatives who worried about what direction the Trump Administration would take have been reassured by his Cabinet picks and by his nomination of Neil Gorsuch to fill Justice Scalia’s shoes. Mr. Trump’s firm stance...Read More
