The most memorable moment from the most recent Republican debate was when New Jersey Governor and former federal prosecutor Chris Christie relentlessly criticized Florida Senator Marco Rubio as not being ready for President. Christie ironically criticized Rubio for rehearsing and repeating his talking points. Christie argued that executive experience will help a future president “solve problems” rather than simply giving speeches about problems. The idea that simply being a governor makes you qualified to be President is wrong. For example, Ronald Reagan was a great president, while Jimmy Carter–who served as the 76th Governor of Georgia–was a lousy president. The same goes...Read More

There is a scene in the 1989 film Field of Dreams where Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) asks “Is this heaven?” Ray (Kevin Costner) replies “No. It’s Iowa.” While Shoeless Joe Jackson and the rest of his infamous 1919 Chicago White Sox teammates (more commonly known as the Black Sox) may view Iowa as heaven, the Iowa Caucuses are certainly not a “heaven” for politics. This is not because 72% of Republicans are saying “My candidate lost,” or that Republicans spend much of the run-up to the Caucuses fighting each other over small details. Rather, it is the way the political scene has unfolded in...Read More
During the last Democratic debate, Hillary Clinton essentially called Michigan Governor Rick Snyder a racist. Why? Because of the current water situation in Flint, Michigan. Lost in Clinton’s remarks about Snyder and Flint is the fact that the Environmental Protection Agency knew about potential problems with Flint’s water supply for months, and did nothing to prevent the situation. The regional EPA administrator has had to resign as a result. The situation in Flint is not a first for the agency that claims to be in the business of protecting the environment. A few months before Flint’s water ended up with lethal...Read More
It has been a couple of weeks since I wrote about the situation at Western Washington University. Since then, new information has come out, and certain developments have unfolded. A student, alleged to have posted comments such as “Lynch Her” (referring to the student body president) on the Yik Yak messaging service, was arrested and has been charged with malicious harassment. Malicious harassment is a Class C Felony in the state of Washington, punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. While virtually all of us who attend WWU agree that posting threatening comments on the internet is...Read More
Barack Obama campaigned in 2008 as the anti-George Bush: he was going to bring peace to the world by being everything that George W. Bush was not. Now, seven years later, his foreign policy has been a failure by any objective definition. During a recent press conference on Paris, he said in part that he was “not interested in doing is posing or pursuing some notion of American leadership or America winning.” This could be the most mind numbing and asinine thing an American president has ever said. Obama has compared himself to Washington, Lincoln, and FDR, but in terms of being Commander-in-Chief, Obama...Read More
