Syria and the Consequences of Unseriousness

It has been over a year now since the United States began the bombing campaign against ISIS.  Therefore, it must be asked: what has over 12 months of bombing gotten us? The answer is as tragic as it is infuriating: not much. In recent days, most of the Western world’s attention has been on the wave of people seeking to relocate from Syria to Europe.  Debate has occurred over whether this is a genuine refugee crisis or a refugee crisis in name only, and what do about the situation.  According to the United Nations, the ratio of refugees is almost...

Hillary’s E-Mail Problems

The snowball rolling down the mountain that is the Hillary Clinton e-mail scandal keeps getting bigger.  She has now admitted to receiving classified information after originally denying that she ever sent or received classified information on her private e-mail.  She has justified it by saying they were not originally “marked classified.” Regardless, there are multiple problems with her reasoning.  The first is that the State Department’s Inspector General disputes this claim.  Second, some information she possessed, sent, and received, is classified by default regardless of whether or not it is marked “classified.”   For example, Reuters points out that information automatically classified...

What is Political Correctness?

According to “Republican” presidential candidate Donald Trump, something America does not have time for is political correctness.  This raises an important question: what is political correctness, and what is political incorrectness?  These words are frequently thrown around in political discourse, but we rarely take the time to stop and think about them. The Democratic Primary Circus

Many people think that the Republican Party, and its field of 17 candidates, is the biggest political circus heading into 2016.  However, while not nearly as populated, the current Democrat field is full of some interesting characters and story lines as well.  The Democratic primary, in many ways, is shaping up to be just as brutal as the Republican primary. The conventional wisdom has been that the 2016 Democratic Primary will be a coronation for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.  Unfortunately for Hillary Clinton, the same thing was said to be true in 2008.  As for her 2016 run, her favorability has plummeted from...

The Predictable European Disaster

In 1993, Margaret Thatcher recalled conversations she had with John Major over what would eventually become the European Union’s defining policy accomplishment, the creation of the Eurozone. We had arguments which might persuade both the Germans – who would be worried about weakening of anti-inflation policies – and the poorer countries – who must be told they would not be bailed out of the consequences of a single currency which would therefore devastate their economies. Thatcher predicted that countries that used to be able to inflate away their debts would not be able to do so under a single European currency...
