“Obesity Discount” to Debut at 2014 World Cup

If you have a Body Mass Index of 30 or higher, you can get a great deal at the World Cup: an extra-wide seat, sold at a 50% discount. It is one thing to allow for different body sizes. It is another thing entirely for the government to essentially reward people with a certain body type by discounting their tickets to the World Cup. FIFA, as a rule, tries to follow the laws of individual host countries. (This is okay.) The 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil. (This is okay.) Dennis Rodman, Please Stop Talking

Dennis Rodman, in an interview from Pyongyang on Tuesday, blew up at a CNN reporter who asked Rodman if he would use his relationship with Kim Jong Un to advocate for the release of an American citizen currently imprisoned by the North Korean regime. In Defense of “Classy”

We live in an era of “don’t judge me.” The people who used to be considered deviant are the ones we now celebrate and make famous. Emily Yoffe, author of the widely respected “Dear Prudence” column at Slate, has decided that “the best rape prevention” is to “tell college women to stop getting so wasted.” She argues that drinking is a choice (duh), drinking to extreme excess makes you unable to protect yourself (duh), and then it gets weird: Yoffe says that college women just haven’t figured this out. “A misplaced fear of blaming the victim has made it somehow unacceptable to warn inexperienced young women that when they get wasted, they are putting themselves in potential peril.” Who doesn’t know that binge drinking is dangerous? This...

Sex, Lies, and the State Department

A foreign service officer in Guyana has been accused of selling visas for sex and money. Edy Zohar Rodriguez Duran, a Texas native who has been stationed at the embassy since 2011, has been the subject of a months-long State Department investigation. Duran was dismissed from the embassy in late June of 2013. Duran’s targets are said to have been local women, and wealthy businessmen – some of whom were in the business of drug trafficking. This is not a small allegation in Guyana, which borders both Venezuela and Brazil. Nearly 2 of every 5 Guayanese lives below the...
