A Straight Answer on Gay Marriage

Tweet I have some news for you:  It is very possible to support the right to marriage equality without supporting gay marriage.  This sounds like a paradox.  But if you can support the right to free speech without supporting Hilary Rosen’s comments on Ann Romney – or if you can support the right to bear arms without supporting some guy keeping his AK-47 in his toddler’s nursery – or if you can support the freedom of assembly without supporting the huge mobs of people showing up at Justin Bieber concerts – then you, my friend, know how to support...

The New Rules of Censorship

Tweet Earl’s restaurants, a restaurant chain in Western Canada, has recently come under fire for its “Albino Rhino” house-brewed beer label. The beer has been around since before I was born. The complaints, however, are new. A group is requesting that Earl’s cease production and sale of the beer because its name offends people with the genetic condition albinism. The rhinoceri have yet to comment. The beer is called “Albino Rhino.” Not “Albino Person.” The name was probably chosen because it rhymes- it’s funny enough to be memorable. Beer companies do this all the time; there are beers called… “Farmer’s Tan” –...

Escheat Law: Setting America Back A Thousand Years

Tweet A new unclaimed property law in New Jersey allows the state to seize unused balances on gift cards after two years of nonuse. This is called escheatment law, and it dates back to the Norman invasion of England in 1066.  The Normans fought a bloody war and needed to organize the chaos that followed, so they decided that any property whose owner was deceased and without heirs would now belong to the state.  The legal term for this is “climbin’ in yo property, snatchin’ yo unused assets up.” NPR and the rest of the mainstream press want you...

The Solution to Airport Security Inefficiency

Tweet For college students like us, it’s time for Spring Break! Time to soak up the sun, get some post-midterm stress relief, and generally enjoy being young and reckless. If you’re getting on a plane, then you’re going to experience the most wasteful and dangerous piece of theater in this country (besides the Spiderman musical): Airport security. On my own Spring Break a few weeks ago, I went through airport security twice. The second time, I was selected to receive a pat-down because I was wearing a hoodie. As a frequent traveler and a college student, it’s not like...

The Importance of Self-Defense

Tweet I met Regis Giles at CPAC. She’s friendly, a bit soft-spoken – the exact opposite of what the anti-gun lobby would want you to think that gun owners are. But Regis is a gun owner. Not only that, she’s the founder of “Girls Just Wanna Have Guns.” I spoke with her at length about what 2nd Amendment rights mean to young women like us. This is what I learned. The very reasons you’d never expect Regis to know how to use a firearm – she’s a woman, she’s young, she’s polite and quiet and the exact opposite of...
