I buy a lot of books. No scratch that. I buy a huge number of books. I adore books. In an average year I will buy dozens of books (whether I read them all in that time is debatable). I frequent used book stores and thrift stores, searching for forgotten works of wisdom and wit. I also enjoy buying books online, especially from Amazon. Amazon almost always has what I need at a reasonable price, as well as a dozen other things I very much want. So into the Amazon cart they go! At last count, my Amazon cart has a...Read More

FGM, or female genital mutilation, is a rite of passage for young girls, found in many parts of the world. The practice is largely found in Africa, and in some parts of the Muslim world outside of Africa. This practice is among the vilest things that may be done to a girl. It is justified on grounds of keeping a girl sexually pure, and thus more valuable when it comes to marriage. It is unclear why or when FGM began to be practiced. The practice is best known among Muslims, and among those it is African Muslims who are most infamous for it. It is the case that FGM is found in nations with a substantial Christian population such as Benin, 42%, and Cameroon, 40%, though it is not clear that African Christians or animists practice FGM. For our purposes we will look at FGM among Islam. Among Muslims FGM is justified upon grounds of Islamic teaching, as well as tribalist ideas of honor. It is found in the Hadith, the saying and deeds attributed to Muhammad, that circumcision is to be performed upon both boys and girls. It is likely that Muhammad borrowed male circumcision from Jewish communities in Arabia. Circumcision has also been practiced among ancient Egyptians, and other groups, including Christians. As the world turns some women, who have survived FGM, are speaking out against it....Read More
On Wednesday in Alexandria, VA, a suburb of Washington, D.C., 66 year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois, walked onto a baseball field and opened fire. The men on the field were Republican congressmen and staffers. Republican Majority whip, Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, was shot, as were at two GOP staffers and two Capitol Police officers. Hodgkinson died in the hospital after being shot by Capitol Police on the scene. While Scalise was reportedly in critical condition, he and the other victims are expected to recover. We still do not know exactly why Hodgkinson did this. However, we do have a solid possibility: he may have...Read More
On Wednesday, “Crooked Hillary” Clinton participated in the annual “Code” tech conference. During that conference, Mrs. Clinton excused many of her worst mistakes, and complained about the way she was treated during the election. Hillary’s String of Complaints First, she complained about “the way that the use of my email account was turned into the biggest scandal since lord knows when.” Never mind that it wasn’t “turned into” a scandal: it was a scandal, one for which she ought to have faced serious jail time. Hillary also complained about the controversies surrounding her Wall Street speeches as Secretary of State. She claimed that...Read More
Again, a Muslim has shared his peaceful religion with the world; again, innocents are dead, including a dozen children, one a girl aged 8. Again, we see the world rush to explain away the attack as a lone wolf. But not all responses to the latest tragedy are the same. Katy Perry, diva divine, has shared her wisdom with the world on the Elvis Duran Show, saying, ” I think that the greatest thing we could do is just unite and love on each other, and like, no barriers, no borders, like, we all need to just co-exist.” J.K. Rowling chose to emulate one of her novels. In her Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when Voldemort returns, the powerful Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, pressures the wizard newspaper, The Daily Prophet, to write stories of how Harry lied about Voldemort’s return, thus hiding an uncomfortable truth. Rowling has just done the same. In a tweet after the attack, she went after journalists for trying to uncover the truth behind the attacks. Yes that’s right, J.K. Rowling has become The Daily Prophet, hiding truths to protect the powerful. Rowling has also attacked Laura Ingraham after Ingraham questioned how it was that darkening the Eiffel Tower really changes the situation in Europe. Donald Trump’s response has been far different. Trump, master of the juvenile put downs we all remember, declared...Read More
