#FryJahar

I have a classification of human beings that I use only in exceptional cases—I call it the “get off my planet” category. People who have attained “get off my planet” status include Steve Smith, who raped and murdered a six month old, Timothy McVeigh, who blew up a daycare and caused the deaths of 168 people, and as of April 19, Dzhokhar “Jahar” Tsarnaev, who is currently on trial for the Boston Marathon bombing. Unlike the harem of girls who believe “Jahar” to be innocent, and just happened to be photographed in the very wrong place at the very...

A Tale of Two Sex Scandals

In 2005, the media exploded when a sex scandal hit Milton Academy, a prestigious preparatory school in Milton, Massachusetts. A sophomore student was caught giving oral sex to five members of the varsity hockey team in their locker room—reportedly as a “birthday gift” to one of the players. The five hockey players were expelled, two whom were over the age of 16 and were charged with statutory rape (escaping jail time by accepting a plea bargain), and the sophomore student was placed on administrative leave. The age of consent in Massachusetts is 16, and the girl in question was below...

Elizabeth Warren’s Game of Loans

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is definitely not an economist. Her recent student loan interest rate bill makes that clear. Sen. Warren’s bill would lower the interest rate on Stafford federal student loans to .75%, the same rate the Federal Reserve gives to big banks. The argument given is, “If the banks can get it, so can the students.” Look. We have student loans. They suck. We don’t look forward to paying them back. On paper, an interest rate of .75% sounds great. Sign us up! The economic implications, however, of an interest rate this low would be disastrous, and...

Jesus Was Not a Socialist

While stumbling upon Facebook, I came across the following image: The image is obviously in reference to the Biblical miracle of Jesus described in Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:31-44, Luke 9:10-17 and John 6:5-15 of feeding a large crowd using only five loaves of bread and two fish. While this feat may be impressive, it is not, as this image implies, socialism. Let’s take a gander at the definition of socialism: So•cial•ism (noun) \ˈsō-shə-ˌli-zəm\ 1. Any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods The key...

Thank You, Officer Plourd and Officer Pellerin

In the midst of the shooting at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, CT., Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association, publicly issued a call for armed officers in all American schools. Reactions were mixed: some lauded LaPierre for the idea, while others thought he was essentially insane. My reaction, on the other hand, was quite different from the people heralding LaPierre as either a genius or a kook. My reaction was this: Wait, some schools don’t have an armed resource officer on their campuses? I hail from Scarborough, ME, a suburban/slightly rural town of around 20,000 people that’s...
