Separation of Powers…If Only by Default

On Thursday, the Supreme Court denied President Obama’s latest immigration plan. The court voted in a 4-4 tie, effectively a defeat for the Obama’s executive orders in question. In a proposal Obama himself drafted in November of 2014, the president called for a new program that would grant “deferred action” status to illegal immigrants who are parents of legal citizens. This means that some illegal immigrants would receive temporary legal status and work permits. By writing these orders, Obama assumed the power to write his own laws. The authority to write laws is only awarded to Congress.  His actions sat in direct...

“Radical Islam” is Real and Relevant

Last week, a man tragically attacked a nightclub full of American citizens. The attacker then pledged allegiance to ISIS over a 911 call during the attack.  Despite these facts, many pundits and politicians have tried to avoid referring to ISIS or “radical Islam” in responding to this attack. Avoiding identifying the ideology that motivated the deadliest mass shooting in America’s history is just wrong. Since the attack, many politicians–including President Obama–have shared their opinions on handling the situation.  But in his response, President Obama failed to mention radical Islam or Islamic terrorism in regards to their relation to the shooting in...

An Inconvenient Truth at Ten Years

In 2006, Al Gore swept through both Hollywood and the rest of the world with his documentary, An Inconvenient Truth. In celebration of the production’s 10-year anniversary, I thought it appropriate to revisit this landmark film.  An Inconvenient Truth sparked the political cause of our generation. Retreat! Get to higher ground! Rapid melting of the polar ice caps is causing destructive...

Blacks and The Disenfranchised Vote

The black community is not being heard.  I would argue that this is an immutable fact.  African American children have a harder time succeeding in life and nobody seems to care.  They are outspoken and engaged.  They care greatly for their families, but can’t seem to convince the officials in power to enact real, substantive change. For decades, the black community has been the largest consistently Democratic voting bloc in presidential elections. Out of all races, Republicans consistently receive the fewest amount of votes from African-Americans. According to the Roper Center at Cornell University, in the 2008 election, Republican candidate John...
